About Northwest Frozen

Northwest Frozen is an innovative and intrapreneurial company that leverages human ingenuity to drive the cutting edge of food technology. Since 2008, our purpose has been to elevate the quality of frozen food in any market in which we operate, whether that is schools, hospitals, the military, or retailers. With a tradition of zealous R&D, we relentlessly pursue food innovations that others consider impossible.

Why I started Northwest Frozen

I’ve been entrepreneurial my whole life – an outlier within a family of academics. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a double major in finance and mechanical engineering, and moved to New York to work as an investment banker. Even though my banking career was off to a good start, I kept thinking about a very different kind of business opportunity: bringing healthy food to schools. Sushi was the perfect solution because kids could share it with friends and dip it in sauces, and they might not even notice the vegetables. 

But I realized there was a big problem with my vision for sushi in schools: at school-sized volumes, you have to freeze the sushi for transport and storage, but the rice dries out when you freeze it. I was confident that I could find a solution, so I moved to Seattle and started Northwest Frozen. This began a long, intense R&D period of cooking and freezing rice, with a lot of trial and error. Over the years, my team and I have proven we can scale the business to meet our customers’ needs, and I’m still deeply committed to providing healthy food to schools and anywhere else it's needed.

We operate quickly as a collaborative team, which allows for beneficial rule-breaking with the goal of higher quality. We have launched entire new divisions within a six-week time frame. Because we move fast, we can afford to be open to experimentation, which sparks ideas.

We’re not satisfied with the status quo of what frozen food is supposed to be like. We are always innovating in the pursuit of better quality food, and so we have high standards for one another and for what we do.

We encourage entrepreneurial thinking and action, and can turn ideas into reality quickly. We encourage our employees to be self-starters, and are constantly trying to find where the entrepreneurial spark can be manifested to create new products that meet customer needs.
